Duo 彩 AYA (彩 AYA meaning “bright colors” and “vibrancy”) is an electrifying ensemble that bridges cultures and continents through their dynamic partnership. Featuring flutist Rachel Woolf and marimbist Makana Jimbu, the duo invites audiences on a journey of global and imaginative soundscapes, blending traditions with innovative artistry. Their collaboration, rooted in a deep musical friendship, showcases the vibrant synergy between flute and marimba while exploring the boundaries of chamber music.
Their debut album Cycles will be released on Neuma Records in Spring 2025 and explores themes of recurrence, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life. This collection weaves together commissioned works and classics reimagined for flute and marimba, reflecting their global influences and personal connections. Featuring newly commissioned compositions by Miriama Young, Gareth Farr, Evan Williams, Fumihiro Ono, and Paul Millette, the album is a mosaic of extended techniques, intricate rhythms, and kaleidoscopic textures. Each piece tells a story rooted in shared experiences and cultural ties. Classics included on the album are seamlessly integrated, forming a cohesive tapestry of sound that connects the Americas, Asia, Africa, and imagined interstellar realms.
Rachel, based in San Antonio, Texas, and Makana, based in Tokyo, Japan, began their partnership at the University of North Texas, where they discovered their shared passion for collaborative performance. Despite living on opposite sides of the world, they continue to inspire audiences with performances that celebrate cultural diversity, deep connections, and the power of music to transcend borders.
Duo 彩 AYA has performed extensively across the United States at institutions such as The University of Texas at San Antonio, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the University of North Texas, Texas Christian University, and the University of North Carolina system (Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Wilmington, and Pembroke). Their artistry has also been featured in chamber music series across San Diego, California.
Duo 彩 AYA’s performances are characterized by their ability to breathe new life into the collaborative music space. Their repertoire highlights the versatility and vitality of flute and marimba, showcasing delicate phrasing, extended techniques, and stylistic variety. With a focus on the circularity of life—beginnings and endings, the turning of seasons, and the deepening of connections—the duo invites listeners to embark on a transformative musical experience.
Through their innovative programming and commitment to global artistic dialogue, Duo 彩 AYA continues to inspire audiences and redefine the possibilities of chamber music.
